James Cree built a house called Tusculum in 1858. In 1867 his second cousin Edward H Cree visited him and made this painting of the house. In 1902 James's son James Edward Cree returned from New Mexico and added a massive 26-room extension to the 10-room original building. It was later taken over by James Edward's daughter Irene Cree who had it converted into flats. In 1969, 102 years after their grandfathers had met there, Gerald Hilary Cree, grandson of James Cree, visited Irene at Tusculum. They were fourth cousins.2,13
