According to the 1850 Federal Census records, Mary Jane, Margaret and Sarah Cree were born in Indiana. However, according to these same records, Robert Cree and his children and the two children of his wife from a previous marriage, were living in Israel Township, Preble County Ohio in 1850. From this information, it would seem that Robert Cree first went to Indiana when he left Pennsylvania. Sometime between 1847 and 1850 he moved from Indiana to Preble county, Ohio and then at some later time he moved back to Cass county, Indiana. John Elliot Cree was also known as John Cree. For some reason he was led to drop the "E"...1 He was born on 19 July 1805 in Dublin Twp., Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA. He is reported to have been born at Aughwick Valley.2 He was the son of James Cree and Elizabeth Walker.

In 1826 John Elliot Cree moved from Huntingdon County and settled at Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, USA.3

Under the pastorate of Rev. Daniel McKinley, D. D., Mr. Cree united with the Falling Spring Presbyterian church, and at once became an active member, especially in the departments of Sabbath school and prayer-meeting work. Shortly afterward he was elected a ruling elder, in which capacity he served the Falling Spring church until 1862, when he removed to Pittsburgh, and remained there until after the rebuilding of his house, which had been destroyed by the burning of Chambersburg. While in Pittsburg he was a member of the Central Presbyterian church, of which Rev. Thomas X. Orr, D. D., was pastor. On his return to Chambersburg he found the Central Presbyterian church had been organized, and he became a member of it
For seventeen years Mr. Cree was superintendent of the Falling Spring Sabbath school, which position he resigned when he removed to Pittsburgh. He was a delegate to the General Assembly a number of times, and was deeply interested in anything that affected his church. At the same time he was active in any general religious movement that was of interest in the community.

Mr. Cree was a man of a genial, sunny disposition, respected by every one in the community and beloved by his family and a large circle of relations.

John Elliot Cree married Jemima Kirby, daughter of Thomas Kirby and Jean Withney, on 24 June 1830 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.4

His son James Walker Cree was born on 27 August 1831 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

His son Thomas Kirby Cree was born on 27 August 1836 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

His daughter Mary Cree was born in 1841 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

His daughter Ellen Cree was born in 1845 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Hester "Hettie" CRIPE... married four times:
#1 Benjamin Johnson on 13 Nov 1873. he died 22 Mar 1895
#2 William L. Britsch on 19 Feb 1898, he died sometime before 1913
#3 John Replogle m 15 Mar 1913; he died 1915
#4 Samuel W. Cree 5 Nov 1917.

These families, which I have studied for years, were mostly Dunkard Brethren, whose church fathers encouraged widows and widowers to remarry even into their 80s. Double and even triple marriages were very common, and sometimes in-laws married one another, generally after child-bearing age, but it is a challenge to sort them all out. Samuel's first Cripe wife was probably related to his last Cripe wife, Hetty... I have not previously had her Samuel CREE husband linked up to the major CREE lines, but have assumed from your site that you know which Samuel CREE married her. I had discounted this before, as Samuel's wife Mary E. Cripe died in N. Dakota, but apparently he returned to Indiana and married again. Many settlers returned from the harsh conditions on the frontier especially in their later years...1
