James Cree built a house called Tusculum in 1858. In 1867 his second cousin Edward H Cree visited him and made this painting of the house. In 1902 James's son James Edward Cree returned from New Mexico and added a massive 26-room extension to the 10-room original building. It was later taken over by James Edward's daughter Irene Cree who had it converted into flats. In 1969, 102 years after their grandfathers had met there, Gerald Hilary Cree, grandson of James Cree, visited Irene at Tusculum. They were fourth cousins.1,2


During excavations in the garden of Tusculum, a medieval stone floor with some iron and lead objects, a brass musical instrument, and several examples of medieval ware were discovered...

Finds from these middens were purchased for the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS] from the Cree Collection...

Significantly perhaps, John Edward was the nephew of the John Cree who was killed when a valve exploded on Locomotion no. 1, of which he was the driver.4

John Edward Cree was a mineral guard foreman.5

His father Thomas Cree died c May 1866 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham.6

John Edward Cree married Jane Plumpton, daughter of William Plumpton and Mary Plumpton (married surname), c November 1866 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham.7
