18th Century immigrants

There are six major Cree branches in the USA that are all believed to be related to each other. All arrived in America from Ireland before 1780 and the links between them were back in Ireland. One branch settled in Elizabeth NJ. The others all settled in Pennsylvania, with later generations moving west to be found today all over the USA. They five lines are:

  • The Elizabeth NJ line - descendants of Joseph Cree of New York and Elizabeth NJ
  • The Robert Cree Sr line of PA - descendants of Robert Cree & Janet Hamilton of Cumberland Township PA
  • The Robert Cree (2) branch of PA - descendants of Robert Cree & Mary Roddy of Tyrone Township PA
  • The William Cree branch of PA - descendants of William Cree & Jane Marshall of Jefferson Township, PA
  • The John Cree branch of PA - descendants of John and Jane Cree of Beccaria Township, PA
  • The David Cree branch of PA - descendants of David Cree & Anne Patterson of Dublin Township, PA

Of the above six lines, the last five were extensively researched by Robert H Cree of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, over a periuod of fifty years or so. We are greatly indebted to Robert for passing the results of his research to the Cree One-Name Study.

In addition there are two branches in Maine (who still use the spelling Crie) who are descended from Scottish migrants:

  • The Perth burgesses line - descendants of William Crie, burgess of Perth
The immigrant progenitors of these two USA branches were:

A line that settled and stayed in Massachusetts for many generations has not been traced to any immigrant to the USA:

  • The Massachusetts line - descendants of Nicholas Cree & Keziah Dwinell of Topsfield, MA
